Imani Christian Ready To Make Some Noise
By: Pittsburgh Basketball Report
To the average Pittsburgh high school basketball fan, the words Imani Christian may not even register as a
local high school basketball program. However, Imani Christian Academy, is preparing itself for a tough season
that could potentially put the small school on the map. The school competes in the South West Christian
Athletic Conference (SWCAC), and it is not part of the WPIAL. Imani Christian must deal with the same issues
that The Kiski School (Saltsburg, PA) runs into. Even though they are local high school programs, since they do
not compete in the WPIAL, they are often not covered by the local media. However, Imani Christian Academy
will still be playing against Leechburg, Wilkinsburg, Vincention, Peabody, as well as participating in the Fort
Cherry Tip and Gateway Christmas tournament next season.
Coach Khayree Wilson says that the team will be led by two 2011 prospects, 6'8" power forward Alonzo Murphy
(transfer from Schenley), and 6'2" guard, T.J. Jackson. According to Coach Wilson, both players are receiving
Division 1 attention. Murphy has received calls from over 10 schools including Maryland Eastern Shore, Liberty,
St. Francis (PA), and Towson. Jackson has also received a lot of attention getting calls from schools such as
Mt. St. Mary's, Loyola (IL), St. Peters, and IUPUI. Murphy played AAU basketball for the Basketball Stars of
America program, and Jackson played for Rise High. They will both have the opportunity to be seen by these
coaches, as they play a national schedule this upcoming season.
The school's tough schedule for the 2010-2011 season includes games against The Kiski School, Oak Hill
Academy, DeMatha Catholic, Friends' Central, and Huntington Prep. While the names of these programs may
not resonate among the average WPIAL basketball fan, this schedule includes some of the top private and prep
school teams in the country. With a very small enrollment, and mostly Pittsburgh city kids, Imani Christian will
definitely have the decks stacked against them this upcoming season. However, they are prepared to take
some lumps on their way toward building a competitive private school program in the Pittsburgh area. Look for
them to make some noise this upcoming season.
