North Allegheny Steals One At The Buzzer
By: Steve Brodzinski
North Allegheny went on the road and battled to a 73-72 win against Pittsburgh Central Catholic. The game was physical from the start,
but Central Catholic star Lincoln Davis didn't mind. He scored the first 8 points of the game, on his way to a game high 29 points. North
Allegheny hung in during the first half, as it seemed they couldn't buy an outside shot. North Allegheny star player JC Howard struggled in
the first half, but Central Catholic allowed NA to stay in the game with turnovers. Central Catholic led 36-32 at the half. Central Catholic
went on a run in the third quarter that included a couple of dunks. Lincoln Davis and Claude Scott combined for 6 dunks during the game.
However, North Allegheny weathered the run, and JC Howard finally found his range, sinking a pro-range three as time ran out in the
quarter to put North Allegheny ahead 55-46.
Things almost got out of hand for North Allegheny when Howard picked up his fourth personal foul with seven minutes remaining in the
fourth quarter. Central Catholic went on another run, and actually took the lead. However, with solid bench play, including big
contributions from sophomore David Haus, North Allegheny was up by one with about twenty seconds to go. Central Catholic got the ball
to Lincoln Davis who knocked in a tough three point shot to put them ahead by 1 with about 10 seconds to play. However, while Central
Catholic briefly celebrated, JC Howard dribbled through the defense, making a perfect pass to senior forward Ricky Minsterman who was
standing directly underneath the basket. Minsterman scored the ball with about 3 seconds remaining, and Central Catholic didn't have
enough time to get a shot, or probably even realize what just happened. The game had the feel of a playoff match-up, and both teams are
probably looking forward to the next meeting already. Lincoln Davis scored 29 for Central Catholic, Claude Scott added 12, and Sam
Calhoun put in 11. For North Allegheny, JC Howard scored 27, Ricky Minsterman dropped 17, and Scott Blumer had 10.
