Some Early Upsets In Playoffs
By: Steve Brodzinski - Pittsburgh Basketball Report
Less than a week into the playoffs, some top seeds have already made their exit. Probably the biggest upset so far was Trinity taking down #4 seed Keystone Oaks 72-62.
Keystone Oaks came into the game with a 20-2 record, as apposed to the 13-10 record of Trinity. In the same part of the Class AAA bracket, in another upset Beaver Area
took down #5 seeded South Fayette, 68-65. Who would have thought that Beaver and Trinity would be meeting in the quarterfinals of the Class AAA playoffs? Also in
class AAA, Central Valley also took down #6 seed Greensburg Salem, 49-43.
In class AAAA, the biggest upset thus far was #14 seed Seneca Valley taking down #3 seed Mt. Lebanon. I had picked Mt. Lebanon to make it all the way to the finals, but
Seneca Valley defeated them 45-42. In another upset, #13 seed Peters Township, took down #4 seed Woodland Hills, 67-56. Due to the "Punch heard round the WPIAL",
the 30 point performance by Gabe Pritz, and significant upset by Peters Township, seemed to be lost in the headlines. #12 seed Central Catholic also upset #5 seed
Hempfield with a big 70-44 win. So in both class AAAA and class AAA, at least 3 of the top 6 seeds all lost in the first week.
In class AA we are waiting for tonights games to see if there will be any upsets, and in Class A there were real big upsets in the first week.
